Executive 2011-2012

Mark Hearson - President

Mark Hearson has reassumed the role of President for his fifth and final year of Civil Engineering at the U of M. He hopes to use his previous experience as Secretary, Treasurer, and President to make this a record year for the Student Chapter by pursuing new initiatives and promoting the Student Chapter as to increase student and professional involvement.

Mark’s studies have allowed him to explore working in other places, such as Victoria (British Columbia), Fredericton (New Brunswick), and San Jose (Costa Rica). Mark’s interests lie in the areas of transportation planning, urban planning, site design, and international development. He hopes to further explore those interests through travel and continued education at the graduate level.

Rebecca Peterniak - Vice President

Rebecca will be completing her Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering this December, and will begin pursuing a Masters degree in Transportation Engineering in May of next year.  Her interests lie in road safety and transportation ecology.  She is currently conducting research on the problem of wildlife-vehicle collisions in order to identify engineering countermeasures that can be implemented on Provincial Highways in Manitoba.

Rebecca joined the Student Chapter in 2009 and served as Secretary for last year’s 2010 – 2011 term. She is on the Deans Honour List and registered as a student member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC).

Rob Poapst - Treasurer

It has been a year now since Rob has started his graduate studies at the University of Manitoba and he still has one more year to enjoy. Exploring the bigger questions in life and how they relate to transportation has sparked his passion in sustainable transportation, more specifically in public transit and cycling.

As Treasurer  of the Student Chapter Rob will not only keep the books but he will also take a lead role in organizing some of the chapters many events and tours. He is really excited about directing a community building project that will see the Student Chapter rehabilitate bikes for junior high school students from the cities urban center. The project will educate the students how to maintain their new bikes and provide an urban riding safety course. Rob believes that "Progress towards a safe and equitable transportation system is progress towards a sustainable and healthy community".

Adam Budowski - Secretary

Adam has taken on the role of secretary after thoroughly enjoying his term as one of the student chapters special events coordinators.  Currently, he is completing the final year of his undergraduate Civil Engineering degree at the University of Manitoba.  Adam is interested mainly in sustainable and active transportation. Upon graduation he is looking forward to working abroad to gain experience in one of these fields.

This will be Adam's second year as a member of both the Canadian Society for Civil Engineers (CSCE) and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).  Adam cannot wait to get to work with his fellow student chapter members, and use the knowledge and experience gained from last year to help make this the student chapter's most successful year ever.

Danielle Salem - Special Events Coordinator

Danielle is in her third year of her undergraduate Civil Engineering degree. Her interests in transportation engineering lie in road sustainability, alternative design and pedestrian focused road design in densely populated areas. She has had previous experience with alternative reinforcement and roadway design both in the laboratory and in the field, working for various construction companies in Manitoba. Upon completion of her bachelor degree a graduate degree in City Planning and Infrastructure may be in her future.

Danielle is currently a student member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineers (CSCE), a student member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM), and a new student member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).

David Breen - Special Events Coordinator

David is currently completing his fourth year of his undergraduate Civil Engineering degree at the U of M. David has become highly interested in traffic systems and urban planning while studying transportation. He considers himself well travelled throughout Central America and Europe, hoping to use his experiences to work abroad in a transportation field following graduation.

Dave is currently a member of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the University of Manitoba Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (UMGNCTR).

Noëlle Vialoux - Special Events Coordinator

Noëlle will be graduating from the civil engineering program in December 2011 with a minor in management. Noëlle’s interests lie in bridges, transportation planning, sustainability and active transportation. Noëlle has previous engineering experience with the transportation department at AECOM, as well as Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation.

Noëlle was a recipient of the 2007 Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation AMEC female Aboriginal engineering award and the 2010 Manitoba Hydro Generating Futures scholarship, among others. Noëlle is a student member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) and recently joined the student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).

Sarah Klassen - Special Events Coordinator

Sarah Klassen is currently in the fifth and final year of her undergraduate Civil Engineering degree at the University of Manitoba. She is particularly interested in the areas of active and public transportation.  Having lived overseas, she is also interested in learning more about transportation in developing countries.  After graduation, Sarah hopes to continue her engineering education by entering a master’s program, but not before traveling around the world for several months.

Sarah is on the Dean’s Honour List and is a student member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM).  Sarah joined ITE as a student member, as well as the U of M ITE Student Chapter in May 2011.
